The next event coming up will be a special 5 part event brought by The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO’s Eastern Regional Office).

General Overview

Unfamiliar with patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets? Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from USPTO experts about intellectual property (IP) basics and potential ways to protect your innovation as you transition from idea to product. The USPTO’s Midwest Regional Office offers this session for aspiring entrepreneurs, innovators, and students the first Thursday of each month. The discussion will cover:

1) Intellectual Property 101, Mon Feb 7

Do you want to know more about patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets? Join us to learn about intellectual property (IP) basics and potential ways to protect your innovations as you transition from idea to product. The session will cover:

• What is the United States Patent and Trademark Office?

• An overview of intellectual property types: patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.

• Why innovators and entrepreneurs should consider protecting their IP.

• How to get started in protecting your intellectual property.

2) Patent basics, Tue Feb 8

Do you want to learn the basic facts about patents? Join us as we explore the different types of patents, including utility, design, and plant. You will discover the difference between both provisional patent applications and non-provisional patent applications, and how to use them. Further, you will learn about the process of patent prosecution, the role of the U.S. patent examiner, and what to expect when working with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. You will also receive information regarding a number of patent prosecution programs and initiatives available to applicants.

3) Filing a Provisional or Non-Provisional Utility Patent Application, Wed Feb 9

Learn about important considerations when filing a U.S. patent application including both provisional and non-provisional type utility applications. The content and format of both application types will be discussed, also addressing the necessary USPTO forms and fees, which accompany a filing. The unique nature of patent claim drafting will also be touched upon during this session.

4) Prior Art Search, Thu Feb 10

Before you file your patent application, you need to conduct a prior art search. Learn to search databases used by patent examiners. This session will be useful for inventors, entrepreneurs, and those who have a beginning to intermediate knowledge of patents and would like to learn more about patent searching. This session will cover essential questions, including:

• What are the benefits of searching?

• Where can you search?

• When should you search?

• How do you search using USPTO search tools?

5) USPTO Resources for Inventors, Innovators and Entrepreneurs, Fri Feb 11

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) provides a wealth of resources. Join us if you want to learn more about how to protect your intellectual property and where to get help. Learn about these various resources, many of which are free, and utilize them as you begin or continue down your path of innovation. The session will also include a focus on the USPTO’s COVID-19 relief and assistance efforts.
